I think that looking at your "oponent" in a debate is typical & even wise. I'm remembering from my debate days in jr. high & high school. Yes, you were supposed to look at the audience, but also it is meant to be an exchange of ideas. And of course Jim Lehrer was trying to get each of them to address the other, "Tell him!" If it is tough physically for McCain to look at someone else, he can turn his entire body to face the person & avoid having to turn his neck/head. I think being able to look at someone in the eyes is crucial, especially for a person wanting to be President. The President sets the tone for what kind of Administration it is to be. I would personally prefer someone who will try to find common ground & will be a "team player" with other people rather than someone who will not engage with others. Just my preference/humble opinion.
