Ray, I have to say that I think that the ideas that we're "winning the war" & that "the surge has worked" are certainly debatable. The only information that the vast majority of people in the United States has are of OUR (i.e., U.S. troops) casualties. The BBC is a great news source, among others, that tell us that the Iraqi civilian casulties have been far, far more! (Also Michael Ware, Matthew Chance & Karl Penhaul of CNN; their reporting from Iraq is astounding in terms of what all we do not know.) Many innocent Iraqi children, women & men have lost their lives throughout our misguided and ill-fated endeavor into their country. They continue to be extremely fearful of going out of their homes to do even the most basic things, especially in certain areas of the country, outside of Baghdad. This whole thing has been one big bloody mess.
Iraq is a highly multi-confessional state, made up of Sunni, Shiite and Kurds. Although this is a country that can be bombed, as we did nearly 6 years ago, this is a situation that needs a great deal of diplomacy & negotiation if there is any ghost of a chance to have everybody come to the table & agree to be a solidified nation. I think that by our very behavior, the war, we have negated ourselves in terms of any hopes of being able to help them do this. Sometimes, even, I think that Joe Biden's idea of the country dividing up into 3 distinct sections, one for each group, may be the only way to go at this point.
