Monica, I know that this is not really what you're asking, but I work in the public school system in northwest Arkansas. I'm a school psych & my primary job is to evaluate students for special education services. As a part of my job, I have to keep data/records on the students that I evaluate (age, grade, gender, ethnicity, etc.). I used to put "mixed-race" down for children who were, of, well, mixed-race! But that really threw the folks down in Little Rock for a loop, they did not like that category, even though I argued that most of these students did indeed "identify as mixed-race." I see their point in a way, as "mixed-race" could mean black/white, Native American/white, Lation/black, etc., etc. So it was not really very descriptive. Now I've been told to go to the office & notate what the parent(s) have indicated what the child's ethnicity is on their enrollment forms. So they DO have to pick ONE race, but which one they pick is up to their parents.
