actually accompong - I only discovered Negril in 1973 and my earlier visits were all up there in the Cockpit Country -I actually used to stay in rented VW Beatle under the zinc bananna canopy -- residing with those HUGE spiders in the place. The people took great care of us and insured our safety to the maximum. The 1970's were a time when (driving around on the mountain roads) we would hear loud shout outs of "EEPIE" up in those mountains. There was a built in respect and definite "protection" for us though -- the people up in those mountains made sure we were safe and sound and well fed as well as taking us to the many walk foot communities up that way.
The only other place I've visited recently as far as true Jamaican purity is way up in the John Crowe Mountains - up where the train used to pass through many years ago. It takes a LONG time to get up into those mountains now, the roads are a mess, for sure. But STILL.... some violence occurs even in these gentle mountains.
