Courthouse drama circa 1973

My boyfriend (and now ex-husband) and I were staying in Redground, just around the corner from Bones' place which I then knew as the yard of Carlton and Fearon, and John was attacked by six guys at about 5:30 a.m., while sitting on the porch smoking a J. He fought them all off, even when they tried to pepper spray him, he grabbed one of the guys as a shield for the pepper spray -- he thought he was being robbed. Our housekeeping Berna ran from next door in her nightgown, "no man, deh the police, no fight dem mon!" They came inside where I was sleeping and found a little more evidence of spliff ends but didn't take me away.
I took a van to Sav to try and get him out, I can't remember how much money it cost (maybe $100 US, but that was 1973) and he was deported. At first he pleaded not guilty but evidently that's not an option in Jamaica unless you want to wait months for a court appearance.
The deportation officer assigned to take him to the airport after getting his belongings knew the area we came from very well (Albany NY) -- he had worked for years and years on the Amtrak train from New York City to Albany. On the trip back to Redground, he said he wouldn't deport John, but only if we agreed to move out of there immediately. We moved as far away as we could get, up past the Lighthouse, which in 1973 was a really remote place!
