Memories of Bluefields

Long ago (in the 80's) the beach at Bluefields Bay had a little restaurant in a boat on a trailer called "Miss Jamaica, the Love Boat." There was always a big pot of fish tea cooking on an open fire outside, which was delicious.

When the fishermen came in with their catch, you could pick out your fish, take to the chef and he'd cook it on the spot. Couldn't get more fresh than that!

This beach was (and still is) very popular with locals and there was most often a fierce football (soccer) game being played on the beach. ("Excuse me, mi lady, you may park there but was cannot guarantee your safety from the balls.")

On the weekends, families would gather for a day at the beach. Even the older ladies would go swimming, though they would stay fully dressed until it was time to get in the water, then as soon as they got back out of the water they'd scurry to the dressing room to change back into more modest apparel.

There were two outdoor showers, one for men and one for women (although neither was marked and both were completely out in the open). I made the mistake of starting for the male shower but was stopped and gently told of my error "to avoid embarssment."

We spent many lazy days on this little beach, staying until the sun had gone down over the sea.

It is still one of my favorite places. (And was one of Michael Manley's favorite places.)

The road has now been reconfigured to not go so close to the road and there is more there, several shops and places to eat, and more parking.

There now is often an sound system set up on the weekends with lots of dancing and partying.
