traveling through the interior
In Response To: Re: Going back to Port Antonio ()

On one trip we were going to stay overnight at Hollywell park on our way from Kingston to Pt. Antonio but the guard didn't show up to let us in and we ended up driving in the dark through the mountains. At some small hamlet we were waved down and asked if we would take a lady and her baby with us to Pt. Antonio as she had a dr. appt early in the morning. We agreed and she joined us. We got to talking and I asked her how she would have gotten there had we not stopped. She then told there was a bus that came up into the mtns at the end of the day with workers from Pt. Antonio and she would have gotten it on its return early in the morning when it returned. Just as I said that we hadn't passed any buses, we heard a long HOOOOOONNNNNNKKKKK and saw headlights up ahead, several curves away. We honked back and started looking for a place to pull off as the road was not wide enough for both us. Fortunately, she knew the road well enough to direct us to a wide place in the road before the bus reached us. Whew!

The whole time going through the mtns there was a thick mist, not really raining but not really fog. The lady said this was usual on that side of the mtns, and some called it the "land of perpetual rain," which was fitting.

When we got to Port Antonio we dropped her off at a friends, grateful for the ride and we were grateful for her help in finding a place to pull over to avoid the bus.

Back then we didn't worry so much about picking up riders. I'm not so sure about it now. Of course, back then there were very few cars around when we drove in the interior.

I remember being in the Blue Mtns and giving two teenage girls a ride. It turned out they had never riden in a car and just flagged us down on a lark to see what happened. When we passed some adults chatting on the roadside they ducked down out of sight and we figured out that they really had no where to go and should not have gotten in the car with us. We let them off with a story to tell their friends and probably a different one to tell their parents. :)
