Katie, respectfully, I think you are way off base.

It is a legitimate question for you to ask about whether you will be hit on by Jamaican men, etc., However, when you describe the idea of Jamaican men hitting on you to be "disgusting," I find that highly offensive. I understand not wanting to be hit on, but why is the idea of a Jamaican man hitting on you any more disgusting than other men hitting on you? Perhaps it has to do with their skin color? That is one reason I even hestitated to respond to your inquiry.

When you say women on this board like that "kind of attention." What do you mean? Do you mean attention by Jamaican men, as opposed to other kind of men, say white men?

I have been going to Jamaica for more than 25 years. Yes, single women in Jamaica, like other places, attract the attention of men, Jamaican or otherwise. (You should remember also that many single women go to Jamaica specifically to have sexual relationships.) I have been hit on plenty of times by men while I've vacationed in JA. That has never included being grabbed or unwanted touching. Rather, it is more likely that they have proposed marriage. While it is not something I like, it is part of being a women, particularly a single woman traveling alone.

Most of the time, the lines go something like, "excuse me, my dear lady, you are very beautiful, may I walk with you down the beach" or "Pretty Lady, may I have this dance." Even if it is unwanted, it is hardly "disgusting." Most of the time, the efforts are much more polite than I have experienced in the US or any other country. Neither have I had a problem when I've rejected a Jamaican man.

The only time in Jamaica when I have felt threatened by a man was at the hands of a white Scottish tourist, who became loudly verbally abusive and threatening when I declined an invitation to dance as I had heard enough of his racist diatribes against black people. It was Jamaican men who let him know his behavior was inappropriate, that he should have more respect for women, made sure I was ok and suggested to him that it was time to leave.

If you are going to travel alone and wear "as few clothes as possible" you're going to have to figure out how to deal with attention from men, Jamaican or otherwise. I have found that wearing just a few more clothes will help alot. That's why they make beach cover ups. How do you deal with men hitting on you at home?

I hope you don't think this is too harsh, but since you asked, it seems like you should know.

All this being said, as I said before, it seems you will be more comfortable at hotels that are more cloistered, which is the opposite of what I prefer. Thus, I don't think I can give you very good suggestions on which places are best, although there are plenty of those places.

I hope you will go to Jamaica with an open mind. The Jamaican people are one of the things that keep me going back over and over again. Hopefully, you will learn that one shouldn't lump all people into a category but should consider them individually.
