It is worth noting that scammers often prey on the elderly and infirm when questioning how people keep falling for these schemes.
Many of these folks are even sophisticated enough to know about call blocking, caller id, etc. and some are lonely enough that they would take any call.
It only takes a few victims to make these schemes worthwhile. (I am constantly amazed at the small ads in newspapers for people to send small amounts of money, $1-5, and prayers will be made to heal what ever the person is suffering from. Seems crazy to me that people actually send money, but they must or else the ads wouldn't keep appearing.)
Cracking down on these schemes is tough since many are overseas operators and getting the proof is hard enough, but even if the evidence is collected, there is the difficulty (and cost) in getting the bad guy extradited.
It doesn't make it right but I can also see the attraction these schemes have given the amount of money that can be made, compared to the meager wages paid to most Jamaican workers. Sadly, there is often a high price to pay, including losing one's life, when the schemed goes awry.
