If McCain feels he needs to skip out on this debate Friday then why don't they just have the VP debate Friday instead? After all, it would be the job of the VP to step into the shoes of the President if need be, so why not have the Palin/Biden debate on Friday instead? If Palin is ready to assume the job of President at a moments notice then she certainly would be ready to debate Biden too, right?
It appears to me that McCain's campaign is flailing around something awful since the Palin pimple burst along with the economy. I'm pretty sure McCain was buying into the hype that his pick of Palin was "brilliant" and was thinking having her on the ticket was going to allow him to sail right into the presidency, since it's become clear that's not gonna happen they seem to be in full on panic mode, and rightly so...
