Stem-cell research holds fantastic promises for curing Type 1 Diabetes, which is the type that I have. This is an auto-immune disease in which, for some reason, the body suddently misperceives the beta cells, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, as "foreign" & attacks them, destroying them. One of the biggest problems that we have in curing this disease is that if we are injected with new beta cells or have a pancreas transplant, then we must be on huge amounts of immunosuppressant drugs the rest of our lives. Besides the horrible prospect of taking so many drugs every day for eternity, these lower our immune system defenses to the point to where we will catch every cold and flu we come into contact with. There is also plenty of evidence that we are even much, much more at risk for developing cancer! Embryonic stem cells, unlike adult stem cells, have the capacity for being able to develop into beta cells, and some scientists even believe organs (!!), that will safely restore our ability to produce our own insulin, an incredible blessing that I CANNOT EVEN IMAGINE!!! If not for me, then I hope & pray that this becomes available for my younger counterparts who're just now starting to live with diabetes from age one day and beyond. These children deserve to live a better life than I've had; no more pricking your finger 8 times a day, no more giving yourself shots 4 times a day, no more blindness, kidney failure, amputations, neuropathy, etc. Thanks for listening to this.
