Delroy, what hooked me into Jamaica were the lovely long shows at DeBuss, Kaisers, Treehouse and other popular venues in the seventies and eighties. You did not have to wade through hours of local music only to get 1/2 hour or so of the main act. I remember Culture, Dennis Brown, Gregory, etc. playing long long sets making me ache for more. The music between the artists was not hip hop or American rap, it was beautiful sweet roots music. So the show was more than thirty minutes of artful entertainment, it was feeling and learning the history and nuances of roots music. I learned so much from those artists and they weren't just playing a gig, they were singing to the people and touching them with soulful vibes. Bring that back to Negril, re-educate the returning oldtimers and inbibe the newcomers to Jamaica with 100% high quality Jamaican music. It is the country's most valuable asset and yet it feels like it has been pimped by promoters to get more for less and believe me, it's easy to tell. I almost never go to shows in Negril anymore and that is just a shame. Even if the artist is one I love, I have to put up with too much garbage to get to what I want. And honestly, Bobby Dread's time has come and gone.
